Campground Reviews
I will be focusing our campground reviews on the small, out of the way parks that we sometimes come across during our travels. It’s not hard to find a KOA or other large park where we often end up staying. Therefore, I would like to highlight the little gems that you might not otherwise get an opportunity to enjoy.
Crystal Hot Springs – 8215 North Highway 38, Honeyville, UT

A beautiful campground just north of Salt Lake City, sites are $35 to $40 per night, grassy lots with full hook-ups (no wifi). Additionally, as a bonus, they are located next to wonderfully relaxing hot springs. An excellent small town find in an area you might otherwise not even know was there. The one downside — trains!!!
Red Barn RV Park – 2806 East 2nd, Roswell, NM

A cute little RV park located next to an alfalfa field and pecan grove, sites are $27 to $30 per night with full hook-ups and wifi. The best thing about this park is the owner Lee, the sweetest lady you will enter meet. She has put a lot of love into keeping super clean facilities (Joel voted this park’s restrooms the nicest we have been to), has an “honor system” for late night snacks and is such a pleasure to talk with. We just loved this cute little place.
French Quarter RV Resort – 500 N. Claiborne Avenue, New Orleans, LA
The best and worst thing about this RV park are the same – location, location, location!! Yes, it is only a few blocks to the French Quarter – by far the closest RV park you will find in this area. However, it is also located behind an abandoned grocery store and several blocks of a very sketchy neighborhood (seriously, carry mace, a stun gun, some sort of weapon if you are walking at night). The freeway is right above the park, and you will hear sirens 24/7. The park is also surrounded by a very large brick wall and has only gated access, so once you are inside, it is pretty safe . It’s also pricey at over $100 per night weekdays and weekends/special events are $150 per night and up. The benefit of being this close to all the action at a fraction of the price of a French Quarter hotel, you can always take an Uber the few sketchy blocks at night.
Disney’s Fort Wilderness – 4510 N. Fort Wilderness Trail, Orlando, FL

This is definitely not a small or out of the way RV park, but I could not resist putting in a review because it is one of our favorites of the entire trip. You will not be disappointed, but your wallet will be a lot lighter! The park is gorgeous with a surprising amount of wildife – squirrels, tiny Iizzards, wild turkeys and even a doe and her two little fawns. There is so much to do at this park, horseback riding ($), boating ($), lots of great bike riding and walking trails, dinner shows ($), pool with a water slide, dog park, kids park, a nightly campfire and sing along, nightly outdoor movie, buses and boats that will take you to other Disney resorts and shopping, and of course, the theme parks. The park is pretty quiet considering all the people and activities. Everyone seems to be zipping along in golf carts and you can rent one here ($59 per day) or bring your own. The atmosphere is happy and active, the employees and fellow guests have all been very friendly. We stayed 6 nights and would have stayed longer, but ay $114 per night (no discounts for weekly or monthly stays), it’s a bit of a budget buster for full timers like us.
Oak Hollow Campground– 3415 N. Centennial Street, High Point, NC

We were lucky enough to be heading through this part of the country in late fall when the leaves were turning gorgeous autumn colors. The campground fronts a beautiful lake with a small wooden dock and fishing is allowed. Campers may also bring a boat (if you have one) and launch nearby. I am not sure if motorized boats are allowed, as the lake was pristine and empty the whole time we were here. The nightly rate is amazing at $35 per night, which includes full hookups, bathroom/shower (heated!) facilities, laundry, cable and WiFi. The camp host was very friendly and happy to provide restaurant and activity recommendations. Even though it looks like you are in the wilderness, shops, restaurants and activities are all very close by.
